The weather in Kansas City is (finally) warming up and as the days get longer, Spring is the perfect time to tackle one of the most overlooked spaces in your home—the garage. Over the winter, it’s easy for this space to become cluttered with holiday decorations, unused sports equipment, and items that don’t have a proper home. A well-organized garage not only makes it easier to find what you need but also creates a functional space for projects, hobbies, and outdoor activities. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting your garage in top shape for the season ahead.

Step 1: Declutter and Sort
Before you start organizing, take everything out of your garage and assess what you have. Sort items into four categories: keep, donate, recycle, and toss. Be honest about what you truly need—if you haven’t used it in the past year, it may be time to let it go.
Items to consider donating:
Old sports equipment your family has outgrown
Tools or hardware you no longer use
Unused bicycles, scooters, or other outdoor gear
Once you’ve purged unnecessary items, group similar belongings together. Keep all gardening tools, sports gear, holiday decorations, and home improvement items in designated categories.
Step 2: Deep Clean the Space
With everything out of the garage, take advantage of the empty space to give it a deep clean. Sweep out dust, cobwebs, and leaves that have accumulated over the winter. If your garage floor has oil stains, use a degreaser or baking soda and scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe down shelves, cabinets, and any surfaces that collect dirt.
If you notice moisture issues or pests, now is a great time to address them. Check for cracks in the foundation, ensure proper ventilation, and seal any gaps where critters could enter.
Step 3: Maximize Vertical Storage
One of the best ways to keep your garage organized is by utilizing vertical storage solutions. Free up floor space by installing:
Wall-mounted shelving for bins and frequently used items
Pegboards for hanging tools and small equipment
Overhead racks for bulky items like seasonal decorations or camping gear
Hooks and wall-mounted storage are also great for hanging bicycles, ladders, and lawn equipment, preventing them from taking up valuable floor space.

Step 4: Label and Contain
Storage bins are a game-changer when it comes to keeping your garage neat. Clear, stackable bins with labels make it easy to find what you need without rummaging through piles of stuff. Use different colored bins or labels to categorize items:
Green for gardening supplies
Blue for holiday decorations
Gray for tools and hardware
Keep everyday items within easy reach, and place seasonal or rarely used items on higher shelves.
Step 5: Create Functional Zones
Designate specific areas in your garage for different activities or storage needs:
A sports zone for bikes, balls, and outdoor gear
A home improvement area for tools and hardware
A gardening station with pots, soil, and tools
A recycling zone for bins and waste disposal
By creating clear zones, you’ll ensure that everything has a place, making it easier to maintain organization throughout the year.

Step 6: Maintain Your Organized Space
Like any space in your home, an organized garage isn’t a one-time project—it requires regular upkeep. Set a reminder to do a quick check every season to declutter, sweep, and reorganize as needed. Encourage family members to return items to their designated spots, making it easier to maintain order.
By following these steps, you’ll transform your garage into a clean, functional space that supports your family’s needs. A well-organized garage means less stress, more efficiency, and a great start to the spring season!
